The significance of the koa canoe paddle award at Mo'ili'ili

Custom koa wood canoe paddles were awarded at our most recent Mo’ili’ili blessing ceremony with a meaning.

A closer look at one of the awards.

There’s a greater significance to the paddle other than serving as the award for those involved in the project.

A canoe paddle was more than fitting for Ikenakea Development, a partnership between 3 Leaf and the nonprofit Hawaiian Community Development Board, to be awarding.

At Ikenakea, canoe paddling is a tradition. The organization often takes partners, including those involved in the development of affordable Hale Makana O Mo’ili’ili, for a surf on their organization canoe. The activity is symbolic and greatly mirrors the partnerships of the companies and their collaborative work together.

Canoes are only able to move forward when the paddlers work in synchronistically and in harmony. From the start of the project, during covid-19 to finish, post-pandemic, each team member bared their weight in moving the canoe forward.
