“HONOLULU (KITV4) –Today marked another step closer to ensure affordable housing in the islands. Hawaii state and city officials welcomed Hale Makana O Mo'ili'ili with a blessing ceremony.

This development cost close to $40 million.

“I feel lucky housing is actually becoming available. I’m so blessed to have a mayor and he has me to just work together," said Hawaii Govenor Josh Green.

The five-story complex will house more than 100 kupuna. Residents will have parking stalls, round-the-clock security and an on-site community center. This is on top of having the most updated appliances and utilities.

Ikenakea Development and partners said this project addresses the need for high-quality long term housing for seniors that live alone.

They began moving in last month. The age requirement to be a resident is 55 years old.

“We started this project in 2019 and we went through many obstacles like community and neighborhood issues and then we saw the pandemic storm,” said Jonathan Kam, general contractor for the project.

Chris Flaherty, CEO of 3 Leaf Holdings, LLC added this was a team effort. He said this was possible because there was support from all angles including the City and County of Honolulu along with the Governor’s office.

Building management is still taking in more applications.

Mark’s project management team said it will work with the Tenant Association to identify specific interests for seniors and create programs for them.”

We’re proud to be ensuring affordable housing for the islands.
